Tinsel-Jackson Black Gold Ale

British Columbia is a great place to live. It’s legal to brew one’s own beer here! This has given rise to small, owner-operated mini breweries, or U-Brews. A typical U-Brew has several 50 liter copper brewing kettles, beer-making ingredients, a long list of beer recipes, a big, cool storeroom and all of the equipment an amateur brewmeister could ever need to practice their art. For under $150, the U-Brew will sell you the ingredients, let you use their equipment and all but guarantee you 50 liters of decent brew.
We (Sibylle Tinsel and Ean Jackson) went to our first U-Brew (Capilano Brewmasters, North Vancouver, BC. Now defunct.) in November 1992. Since there was no strong, dark German or Belgian-style ales in their recipe book, we decided to invent our own. With a bit of help from Doug Hagenson (the resident brewmaster at Capilano), we played around with with the ingredients and brewed a decent ale the first time through. Refining the taste and ingredients with each subsequent batch, we eventually came up with the Tinsel-Jackson Black Gold Ale as in the recipe below.
The Tinsel-Jackson (or “TJ”, as it has come to be known) is a dark, slightly sweet, high octane (8% plus) ale. Given its kick, the TJ has become a favorite for baseball, football and rugby teams. In a few short years, it has become very, very popular at U-Brews in these parts. We hope you enjoy it, too!
